About Dental Scaling | Tartar Removal
Tartar, also known as dental calculus, is a hardened plaque deposited around your teeth. It is formed due to minerals present in saliva and food residue that gets hardened over time. Unlike plaque, which can be easily removed with oral hygiene and brushing, you require a special dental treatment to treat tartar.
It can develop both above and below the gum line, affecting your gum health and potentially leading to bigger dental problems. That’s why the British Dental Association (BDA) recommends regularly visiting a dental hygienist to get a healthy dental regime.
What are the symptoms of tartar on teeth?
If you have any of the following symptoms, you should visit us quickly.
- Bad Breath – Tartar forms pockets under the gums that cause food accumulation and lead to bacteria fostering bad breath.
- Bleeding Gums – Untreated tartar causes irritation in gums and can cause gum bleeding while brushing your teeth.
- Loosened teeth – Plaque trapped under your gums leads to acid production that might potentially cause your teeth to loosen up.
- Discoloration – Tartar builds up like a hard crust over your teeth due to stains from food and beverages that make your teeth pigmented, which can cause them to appear yellow or brown in color.
- Gum Recession – Inflammation from tartar buildup could cause tissues to pull away from your teeth, exposing the roots of your teeth, which may even lead to multiple teeth.
Dental Scaling Procedures at Warwick Lodge
Deep Cleaning (Scaling and Root Planing): Scaling is the deep cleaning dental procedure to remove plaque above the surface of your gum line. However, when the buildup is deep below the gum line, then the root planing procedure is performed. It is performed by our dental hygienist using a manual tool called a ‘scaler’ to carefully remove the tartar buildup. Depending upon the patient’s pain tolerance level, local anesthesia may be required to ensure relief. Effective scaling and root planing not only helps with plaque and tartar but also helps to prevent gum disease and tooth decay.
Ultrasonic Scaling: Our Ultrasonic scaling treatment involves using ultrasonic devices at high frequency to remove the retained tartar deposited down in the tooth’s surface while also washing away the debris with water. This procedure is effective, fast, gentle, and causes minimal damage to your teeth and their roots. An ultrasonic scaling session typically lasts between 30 minutes to an hour, depending upon the amount of plaque and tartar present over your gums.
Air flow Therapy: Air flow polishing is an advanced way of removing stains from your teeth, we use a highly compressed mixture of air, water, and powdered particles, this mixture helps soften hardened plaque, making it easier to be further removed by scaling. The treatment also helps to clean off the stains caused by coffee, tea, wine, and tobacco.
